Does Going Green Keep Us From Being Green?

Most often the questions we are asked about organic fertilizer are will my garden still be, or become, lush, will my lawn be green, my flowers beautiful and will the cost be prohibitive?

Well, surprisingly, some of the same fertilizers that have been used all along in many gardens are, indeed, organic.

One longtime favorite is Hollytone , which is great for acid loving plants.  This gives plants what they need and lowers the pH level in soil. Hollytone is the perfect nutritional combination for all acid loving plants including: Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Laurels, Hollies, Evergreens and Dogwoods.

Another really great all natural product is Bone Meal .  It also makes use of a by product of meat producing plants, thereby reducing wastes.  It provides a slow, steady feeding of phosphorus and nitrogen, two primary nutrients required by all plants. Bone Meal helps develop sturdy root systems and stimulates plant growth. Bone Meal is an ideal supplement to fertilizers for bulbs, flowers, and roses. It is all natural and approved for organic gardening.

Follow these guidelines for adding Bone Meal as a nutrient to your garden:
LAWNS: Apply in spring, summer, or fall at the rate of 5 lbs. per 100 square feet.
BULBS & GARDENS: Apply at the rate of 10 lbs. per 100 square feet working well into soil.
SHRUBS & TREES: Apply 1 or 2 lbs. to shrub, tree, or bush depending upon size. Distribute under entire spread of shrub or tree raking well into soil. Do not use around plants that require an acidic soil without a soil test to determine that soil pH is too low. POTTED PLANTS: Apply 2 ounces or about 1 heaping tablespoonful per pot; work into soil.

If you live in a farm area, you can always get your own manure, another traditional fertilizer that is all natural.  You can probably get it delivered right to your property.  All you would need is a good, sturdy, mulching/manure pitch fork .  Be sure to purchase a sturdy one, it is well worth the investment.

Compost is also something that reuses and recycles.  As long as you are not in a city, and you have enough space in your yard, you can add a small , medium or large composter. There are also accelerators that can be added to boost the productivity of the natural microbes that are at work to make your compost garden ready.

One is Microbe Lift Compost Maker , which is 100% natural and a specially formulated blend of highly active micro-organisms, nutrients, and special enzyme systems that will synergistically accelerate the natural compost degradation cycle.

Another is
Bio-Excelerator which contains billions of hard-working beneficial organisms to break down and recycle the toughest organic waste quickly.

There are many other products that you can purchase, or even produce yourself, that will keep your garden green and keep some green in your wallet.

Our next article will discuss your lawn and what can be done, naturally, to keep it green and free from diseases.
