Trees That Thrive In Shade

Although it is usually a tree that creates shade, there are times when you are looking for a tree that will grow in shade.  Whether it is the shade of a building, natural structure, or other trees, you may come to need a tree to place in your shade garden.

There are several to choose from that will do the job in full shade, and many more that will thrive in partial shade.

The most versatile is the beautiful dogwood, where the Cornus florida rubra will withstand full sun, and Cornus kousa and other varieties are great in partial sun.  They all have beautiful blooms, in many different shades of color and will grow quite well in a canopy of taller trees.

If an evergreen is what you need for your shade garden, then you can add Canadien Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis).  The tall specimens will grow quite high, to over 40 ft, but there are many dwarf and pendulous varieties available.

For warmer zones, if it is a tropical look you are going for, there is the Parlor Palm (Chamaedorea elegans), with its single trunk and upper green leaves, with flowers or berries, depending on which of the 100 species you choose.

There are several others, including tall varieties of Rhododendron, Bayberry, Olive and Yew.  All of these will grow quite well in shade conditions.
